Colorado!

It seems I have not been keeping up with this blog as I had originally planned and I'm sure no one is waiting for this installment so I write this mostly for myself.  After a year and half of dealing with adverse working conditions from my direct supervisor at Covenant College I decided walk away from my position and begin searching for another place to serve.  This was a tough decision for me because the students at Covenant and my RA's were very close to my heart.  However, after a short search I have been hired to do the exact same thing here at Colorado Christian University.

I am grateful for the opportunity and feel lucky to contribute in some way to the kingdom of God, inadequate as I feel sometimes.  My job consists of directing the community operations of three upperclassmen buildings on campus and the programming that takes place there.  I am also directly associated with 3 other RD's, 3 ARD's and 9 RA's.  I am so grateful that I have a new boss who actually cares about all students, wants to grow me as a professional and shows up to work prepared and ready to do whatever necessary to get the job done right.

Being in Colorado again is nice as well because I am again in the midst of family and friends that I love an care for deeply.  My little brother, Kyle, also moved to CO recently and is looking for a job.  I haven't had much time to spend with anyone due to all the training but I'm sure that will come soon.  I have been up to the mountains a couple times and also got to take part in the annual H.A.S. Golf Tournament with the guys up in the mountains.

I am looking forward to another new beginning and pray the Lord will bless my efforts in this new ministry setting.

Georgia Blizzard

I realize for most of you this title is an oxymoron.  Until last week I would have agreed...but that was before we got 13 inches of snow in one night.  I wouldn't have called it a blizzard, because I've been in them before and they are not pleasant.  I would say it was more of an overnight dumping.  But getting that much snow in Georgia is different than, let's say any state North of Texas from either coast, because they would actually know how to take care of it!  Without any equipment and even less knowhow the result for us on the mountain was a week of cancelled school.  I'm sure the kids were thrilled but as one of the few authority figures left with 1000 energized college kids I was basically reduced to a lion tamer.  Still, it was a good week and a lot of uplifting things happened so I am thankful.  More than that though I am thankful school has started once again and there is structure, schedules and routine.  Here is a photo outside of Andreas of some of the awesome Andreas guys making a "slide" (aka Tower of Babel), my car, and kid from Founders enjoying newfound weaponry on campus.

Passion 2011 Atlanta

It is difficult to put into words my experience from the past few days volunteering at Passion 2011 in Atlanta. It's not because the speakers were so amazing but because the Holy Spirit overwhelmed people, including me. Here are a couple of take aways:

1. I used to think this (iY) generation was a bunch of self absorbed recluses, more concerned about the latest youtube clip or data phone than communicating with actual people in a social context. However, along with experiences with students at Covenant and at Passion I think there is some hope. Jesus means something to these kids. 22,000 students gave just over 1 million dollars in 3 days to various World Wide Ministries. Maybe this just means they are rich? Actually I know this is true but after talking with more than a few students I feel like there is more to their altruistic response than just monetary security.

2. I am old. Here is a short conversation I had with girl while selling message CD's / DVD's:

Girl: Are these all video?

Me: Actually, we have DVD's and CD's here so you can choose.

Girl: So is this audio or video? (Picking up CD of table)

Me: Yep, that's a CD...

(long pause)

Girl: So...you play it?

Me: Yeah (chuckle), it's an audio recording on a disc.

(Girl leaves as I stand shocked; glad we were not selling tapes)

3. Read Radical by David Platt. Today.

4. Jesus is all. What I mean by this is that there is nothing more important in this life than making the Biblical gospel and the name of Jesus known to as many people as possible. Nothing else even compares. If Jesus is who he says he is and we believe the Bible to be true, then everything else must fade to its proper place in line far below the pursuit of and dedication to Jesus. Mountains shake, knees bow, tongues confess, storms rise and fall, dead are raised and lives are eternally changed from ONE name alone: Jesus.

My immediate inclination of large churches and large Christian organizations is one of skepticism simply because of Matthew 7:14. However, God is big enough to use even unChristians to save "Christians." All in all I had a fantastic time and met some amazing people. I got to hear Piper speak and joined others is lifting high the name of Jesus. It was a much needed spiritual adrenaline shot going into this semester.
